The Unsung Heroes of Musical Theatre: Spotlight on Stage Managers and Crew

Updated: Feb 18

Musical theatre is known for its talented actors and singers, but behind every great show are the stage managers and crew who make it all possible. These dedicated professionals keep everything running smoothly and handle countless details to ensure each performance goes off without a hitch. In this post, we'll look at the important roles they play, the challenges they overcome, and why their work is essential to every production's success.

The Role of a Stage Manager

Stage managers play one of the most important roles in musical theatre. Before the show starts, they work with the director to understand the vision and organize rehearsals, scripts, schedules, and where actors need to be. They create virtually all of the paperwork for a show, and they are the main point-of-contact for all the actors, designers, directors, etc. During performances, they coordinate all backstage activities, cueing lights, sound, and set changes, and making sure actors are ready. In many ways, they act as the director’s representative backstage (and onstage), keeping everything running smoothly during the excitement of live theatre.

The Crew Behind the Curtains

The crew brings the stage manager’s plans to life. This team includes technicians for lighting, sound, and set changes, along with costume and makeup artists who make sure every character looks perfect. Each person has a specific job, often developed through years of experience and training, and their accuracy is crucial. Even a small mistake, like a late curtain or a missed microphone, can break the illusion for the audience.

Overcoming Challenges

Stage managers and crew members face many challenges. They work under pressure to deliver perfect shows night after night, often with little time between performances - even just a couple of hours for a dinner break. Technical problems, sudden changes, or surprises like an actor getting sick all demand quick thinking, exceptional problem-solving skills, and calm leadership. Staying composed and making fast decisions is what sets great stage managers and crews apart. They are the life-line of a performance. Without a good "behind the scenes" team, a production would fail.

The Magic Behind Seamless Transitions

A great stage crew and manager make scene changes and technical work look easy. Most people in the audience don’t notice how much effort goes into moving sets and adjusting lights to set the mood and keep the story moving. This smoothness comes from careful planning and practice, with the crew rehearsing their parts just as much as the actors do, and it typically takes months of planning. Many theatre practitioners have experienced the phenomenon of seeing what the team doesn't want you to see: the way a show works behind the curtain. It is this experience that the crew and stage manager want to keep from the general public.

Recognition and Respect

While applause at the end of a show predominantly celebrates the actors and, possibly, the directors, it is crucial to acknowledge the hard work of the stage managers and crew. Without their dedication and skill, the show simply wouldn’t go on. More theaters and production companies are beginning to recognize this and are taking steps to ensure these theatre professionals receive the recognition they deserve.

Every part of a musical theatre production matters, from the lead actors and directors to the stage managers and crew working behind the scenes. Next time you watch a show, take a moment to appreciate the people working hard out of the spotlight. Their passion and dedication help make theatre special and full of life.
